Why Fire Extinguisher Servicing Matters

A fire extinguisher is often the first line of defence in an emergency — but simply having one isn't enough. An extinguisher that hasn't been serviced can fail exactly when it's needed most, whether that's due to a faulty seal, low pressure, or a discharge mechanism that's seized up over time.

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, most non-domestic premises in England and Wales have a legal duty to maintain fire safety equipment in efficient working order. Beyond the legal requirement, it's simply good practice: a monthly visual check by someone on-site, backed by a full annual service from a competent engineer, is the standard most insurers and fire risk assessments expect.

If you're not sure when your extinguishers were last serviced, that's usually the first sign it's overdue. We're happy to check for you as part of a free site visit.

Is Your Fire Alarm Overdue a Service?

It's easy for fire alarm servicing to slip down the priority list — most systems fail quietly, giving no obvious sign anything's wrong until it's tested or, worse, actually needed. BS 5839-1 recommends servicing at least every six months, carried out by a competent person.

A proper service covers far more than a quick look at the panel: testing detectors, checking battery backup, confirming call points and sounders all function correctly, and making sure the system log book is up to date for your records. Skipping this doesn't just risk the system failing — it can also invalidate insurance cover if a claim follows an incident where servicing records don't hold up.
